Analyzing Website Before Optimization

Posted on May 3rd, 2010 May 3rd, 2010 by

This articles covers some of the basics of SEO and website analysis. This is especially important for webmasters who wish to optimize their website themselves..

1) Content is one of the important factors to consider while optimizing a website. See if the site has keyword-rich content on every page. In my experience for most websites you will need to suggest changes to incorporate keywords that you are targeting.

2) It is also important to make sure that every page on the site has unique content. Content duplication of any kind – within a website or across different websites is bad for your rankings. Ask them to rewrite the duplicate content.

3) If the other site has copied the content ask them to remove it immediately. If this fails you can use Google’s special service to fight plagiarism. Check this out for details www.google.com/dmca.html

4) If your client has two or more sites with similar content, it is wise to choose the website that was hosted first. Google might have, most probably, indexed this site first and it probably also might know that the site that was hosted later is duplicate and they won’t rank the duplicate site. Remove the one that was hosted later.

5) Google PageRank roughly tells you if the site is brand new or established. If the site has PR 3 and above in most cases, it will start ranking quickly. There are exceptions to this rule though.

6) Checkout if the site has any back-links. Google webmaster tools provide accurate information. You may also use Yahoo and MSN for checking back links.

7) If the site is in flash, it is important to create HTML pages with good content as search engines do not read flash content.

8) If the site redirects to some internal page or to another URL altogether; remove the redirect. At least Google will not rank such sites.

9) If there are dynamic pages on the site, check if they are ranking or at least have attained some PR. If not, ask them to rewrite dynamic urls.

10) See if the navigation is search engine friendly. Text links to all the page or at least to important pages from the home page are helpful.

11) 12) If there is any hidden text on the site remove it immediately.

12) Check if your internal pages have been indexed by search engines. After your site is live it may take some time to get indexed. But if you feel your site is not indexed completely it helps to get a few links for internal pages.

13) Make sure that the internal pages link to each other internal pages and tot the home pageĀ  using important keywords whenever possible.

14) Depending on where exactly the want to promote their website you may have to ask them to change hosting. If your target market is UK it is important to host your site with hosting companies in UK.

15) If site:sitename search returns supplemental pages it is important to take a quick action. See this section on supplmental pages for details.

16) If there is no sitemap create a user friedly site map to help them understand the scope of the site with text based links. It must be linked from the home page.

17) If the site uses java script and CSS, ask them to make all the CSS and java script external using .js and .css files. Search engines are able to index the actual content easily this way.

18) If the site takes along time to loaf it may drive away qualified visitor after the site starts ranking. Remove unnecessary images, flash, etc that may be causing this.

these are just some of the tips. Please watch this space for more info…
